How To Keep Your Car Windows Ice-Free This Winter

With videos popping up everywhere right now on social media platforms with the latest ‘hacks’ of how to de-ice your windows, it can be difficult to know what works and what might harm your vehicle’s glass. As car wash and car detailing experts, we have picked up a few tricks over the years to keep our cars ice-free during the wintertime.

With icy conditions already being felt across the UK, and further icy blasts set to come over the coming weeks so we thought we’d share our best tips of how to de-ice your windows properly.

PREVENTION:

  1. Keep your car in a garage or cover if possible, this reduces the chance of your windows icing if they are kept away from bad weather
  2. Consider overnight treatments for your windows, there are many sprays and compounds available to prevent ice from building up on the windows.

CURE:

  1. Start your car running 5 minutes before beginning your journey, and set the thermostat to warm. This warms the windows from the inside and helps create a layer of warms which helps to shift stubborn ice.

  1. Whilst leaving the car to sit for 5 minutes, add some salt to the windows. This lowers the melting point of the ice and helps the ice start to melt.

  1. NEVER use boiling water directly onto glass, especially when icy, as the rapid change in temperature, can cause cracking. Sometimes this method can even break the windshield! Instead, apply warmed water across the windows.

  1. Don’t use anything metal to scrape the ice off your windows, metal can cause scratches to form on the glass, which will damage your vehicle glass in the long run.
