What Causes Swirl Marks in Your Car’s Paintwork?
These light scratches in the top lacquer of your car are most often caused by poor car washing techniques. These can often be attributed to those dreaded automatic car washes! The large brushes pick up grit from all the cars that have gone before and these can cause scratches in your paintwork.
Of course, you can still get swirl marks on your car even if you never use an automatic car wash. Not using a separate bucket of clean water to wash out your sponge or mitt when shampooing you could inadvertently drag grit across your paintwork.
How Do You Get Rid of Those Marks in Your Car’s Paintwork?
The only way to really get rid of these marks is by polishing them out. Using a suitable abrasive polish you can take off the very top layers of your lacquer down to the bottom of these light scratches. It’s important that this is done carefully as you could end up taking off too much and damage the paint underneath.
Choosing the right products and techniques to use is also really important. If the swirl marks are particularly deep you may need a coarser product. There is also the decision of whether to use a machine polisher or to polish by hand. If you have a large area to correct a machine will make light work of it but polishing by hand will give you far more control.
